How long does Lip Blush last?

With all cosmetic tattooing, the results vary person to person. Generally, lip blushing can last several years, although your lifestyle contributes to how well it maintains; smoking and sun exposure can speed up the fading process, and if you’re oil-prone, have an iron deficiency or use a lot of exfoliating products in your skin regimen, the pigment could fade more quickly, too.

What factors will affect my cosmetic tattoo?

  • Bleeding during the procedure: Excessive bleeding during your procedure will greatly affect how your body retains pigment. While this is not entirely in our control, it is important that you follow prep instructions to help minimize bleeding. This includes avoiding blood thinning medications, alcohol and caffeine before your procedure.

  • Smoking: Smokers may notice that their tattoo will fade faster

  • Anemia and iron deficiency: Your body will absorb these iron based pigments more quickly.

  • Sun exposure: Increased exposure to the sun will cause premature fading.

  • Color of pigment: Lighter colors fade more quickly than darker colors.

What can I expect at my appointment?

When you arrive for your appointment you will be asked to fill out paper work. A topical anesthetic will be applied while we review your paperwork and aftercare. We will then being a lip consultation. I will draw the shape of the “new” lips so that you can evaluate and make any changes. Once a shape is determined and approved, I will begin tattooing. Anesthetics will be applied throughout the process to help keep you as comfortable as possible.

What can I expect immediately after my appointment?

Once the appointment is completed, your lips may be swollen—it is a tattoo, after all—so you MUST ICE THEM IMMEDIATELY after the procedure. You must ice for 15 on and 45 off for the next 4-5 hours. REMEMBER: Icing today prevents swelling tomorrow. Initially, the color will be super vibrant, almost like a bold lipstick. It is important not to be misled by the immediate ‘after’ results. The immediate results look NOTHING like when the lips are healed. Your lips will look swollen and slightly larger than normal and look as though you may have had a slight lip filler injection. The degree of this varies from person to person. . The size of your lips will shrink back to normal and the color will significantly fade up to 50% within the first 4 days. You will lose color on the inside of your lips first, the edges last. Right after the procedure lips normally feel dry, chapped, tight and tender to the touch. Similar to how a sunburn feels.

How long does the procedure take?

Initial appointments take approximately 2.5-3 hours. This includes the designing process, numbing the area, and tattooing. Follow-up appointments take approximately 1.5-2 hours.

Do I need a touch-up/follow-up appointment?

Please note that final results cannot be guaranteed as each unique skin type will hold pigments differently and break down at different rates. We will re-evaluate how your skin has received the pigment at your second session and make any changes. Two appointments are recommended initially. Each of these appointments being 6-10 weeks apart. At your complimentary touch up session, we will assess the color retention and make any adjustments necessary. Everyone heals differently and at different rates. If your cosmetic tattoo does not heal perfectly the first time, do not worry, we can always make necessary adjustments when you return!

If I have had a lip filler injection already, am I still a candidate for Lip Blush?
A minimum of 4 weeks post-filler is required before your Lip appointment. It is recommended that you have the permanent lip enhancement first and then the lip filler injection once lips are healed.

What should I know about long term care?
Touch-up appointments are optional. If you do not maintain, the color will lighten over time. Fading greatly depends on your skin type and tone, lifestyle, sun exposure, pigment color used, and your overall health. We suggest that if you want to maintain your lips so that they always look their best plan on scheduling a touch up every 1-3 years for best results.

If you are receiving an MRI , please inform the technician that you have had an iron-oxide cosmetic tattoo.

If you are planning to have laser treatments, you must cover your lip tattoo with 20% Zinc Oxide to avoid premature fading of your tattoo.

If you are applying acidic or brightening skincare (AHA’s, retinol, peels, glycolics, salicylic acid, etc.) please first cover your lip tattoo with vaseline to avoid premature pigment fading.
